How to access and try OpenAI o1 models
OpenAI recently introduced the o1 series of large language models, also called “Strawberry.” These models are a huge leap in AI reasoning, built to solve tough problems and learn from their mistakes in different fields. Whether you’re a free or premium ChatGPT user, or a developer you can access o1 models.
Overview of the o1 models
OpenAI offers two versions of the o1 models, each serving a different purpose.
- o1-preview – This version is built for handling tough reasoning tasks. It excels in various areas, including science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). It uses a method called “chain-of-thought reasoning,” which helps break down complicated problems into smaller, more manageable parts. This makes it great at giving detailed and thoughtful answers.
- o1-mini – This model is a faster and more affordable option. It’s ideal for solving coding and math problems quickly while still maintaining high accuracy. If you need fast results without losing quality, o1-mini is a great choice.
Both versions of the models are designed to take their time understanding questions, which helps them provide more accurate answers to complex queries.
How to access o1 models in ChatGPT
Are you ready to start using this powerful model on ChatGPT? Here’s how you can access the o1 models based on your ChatGPT plan:
1. ChatGPT Plus and Team users
If you’re a ChatGPT Plus or Team user, you can use the o1 models starting from September 12, 2024. You can select either the o1-preview or o1-mini model from the ChatGPT menu. Keep these limits in mind:
- 30 messages per week for o1-preview
- 50 messages per week for o1-mini
These limits help OpenAI gather feedback and monitor how the models are doing during this initial rollout phase.
2. ChatGPT Enterprise and Education users
If you’re an Enterprise or Educational user, you should be getting access to the o1 models during the week starting on September 16, 2024. This rollout is meant for schools and businesses that need stronger AI tools for research or teamwork. The usage limits may differ, giving more flexibility based on what your institution needs.
3. Trying the o1 model for free
You can try the o1-mini model for free on ChatGPT by selecting “Alpha Models” in the model selection menu, then choose o1-mini. However, this will only allow you to send a few messages. If you don’t see this option yet, don’t worry. OpenAI plans to expand access to the o1-mini model soon, although they haven’t given an exact date.
Be careful about websites claiming to offer free access to the o1 model. Some might appear reliable, but they often don’t work, even though they may appear at the top of search results. Always carefully check a platform before signing up.
Access o1 model as a developer
Developers interested in using the o1 models can access them through OpenAI’s API, but they need to qualify for usage tier 5. This tier is for higher-level subscriptions that let you integrate advanced AI features into your apps. For now, the API has a rate limit of 20 requests per minute, but this could change as OpenAI continues to adjust its services.

Quick Recap
OpenAI’s o1 reasoning models represent a big step forward in AI reasoning. Here’s a summary of how different users can access these models:
- ChatGPT Plus/Team users: You can access both o1-preview and o1-mini with message limits.
- Enterprise/Edu users: You’ll get access soon.
- Developers: You can use the API if you’re in the right tier.
As OpenAI gathers more feedback and improves the models, expect more updates and expanded access. These advanced models will continue to prove useful for many kinds of projects.
